Abstract
The chapter utilises examples to discuss cognitive and biological factors relevant for sport and exercise psychologists. The first section describes self-referent issues focusing on self-efficacy and self-esteem. We then look at memory, particularly memories of psychological states associated with variations in performance. We continue by exploring concentration and decision making, concepts that lead into a discussion on stress and emotion. In the second half of the chapter, we focus on biological factors. We explore factors such as diet, extreme environments and physical fitness to look at relationships between physiological and psychological states. We conclude the chapter by acknowledging clinical issues, with a focus on eating disorders.
