Abstract
The relationship between critical psychological states and home advantage (HA) was investigated by examining the interaction between competition venue (home and away) and subsequent performance (win and loss) on profile of mood states (POMS) scores. Fourteen male soccer players from the same team completed POMS 60 to 45 minutes prior to 4 league competitions: away win; away loss; home win; and home loss. 2 x 2 repeated measures ANOVA for total mood disturbance (TMD) demonstrated a significant interaction between venue and result. Post hoc analysis revealed the away loss condition to be significantly higher, more negative in terms of mood valiancy, than the home win and loss, and away win. Based upon these results a hypothesis is made suggesting how competitor's self regulatory abilities, with particular reference to tension control, may mediate the role by which critical psychological states contribute to HA.
