Research interests

I am a researcher and educator specialising in coach development, with a particular focus on enhancing coach education and learning. My work is underpinned by an applied approach, translating research into practice through the design and delivery of innovative, contemporary workshops and development programmes. I collaborate closely with national governing bodies and regional partners to support the development of a more effective, reflective, and future-ready coaching workforce.

My research also explores the micro-political landscape of sporting environments, care in coaching, and how coaches build and sustain meaningful working relationships. As part of the Centre for Football Research in Wales, I contribute to multi-institutional and multidisciplinary projects, working collaboratively across national and international contexts to enhance coaching practice.

Current teaching

Martin is a Senior Lecturer in Sports Coaching and PE. His leadership responsibilities are to Programme manage the MSc Sports Coaching provision alingside teaching and module leading across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules, as well as PhD supervision. He achieved Fellow status of the Higher Education Academy in 2018 and Senior Fellow status in 2022.
