Research interests

Martin's research area comprises a critical sociology of sports coaching, pedagogy and performance which informs applied practice.

The purpose is to examine the complexity of coaching contexts in an attempt to develop greater ‘reality grounded’ preparation programmes for students and coaches.

In an attempt to explore such uncertainties, dilemmas and micro-political actualities he embraces a range of qualitative research methods as ways of better understanding sports coaching and sport performance.

Current teaching

Martin is a Senior Lecturer in Sports Coaching and PE. His leadership responsibilities are to Programme manage the MSc Sports Coaching provision alingside teaching and module leading across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules, as well as PhD supervision. He achieved Fellow status of the Higher Education Academy in 2018 and Senior Fellow status in 2022.
