Personal profile

Overview

I am a lecturer in Animal Health with a specialism in viral diseases of livestock. I developed my expertise during my PhD where I worked at world leading institues: The Pirbright Institute (UK), The Friedrich Loeffler Institut (Germany) and The Royal Veterinary College (UK). My research has led me to present my results at conferences in both Europe and the United States.

I completed a BSc (Hons) in Bioveterinary Science at the University of Lincoln where my research career started with a focus on avian immunology. I was awarded an opportunity to complete a summer research project which was titled: Immunological tools for the analysis of Puffinosis in the Manx Shearwater. This lead me onto my dissertation project where I studied "The function of the avian mannose receptor, MRC1L-B in Endocytosis". After my undergraduate degree I completed my PhD research virulence factors of Lumpy skin disease virus a poxvirus causing Lumpy skin disease in cattle.

Since finishing my PhD I have taught a variety of subjects at Writtle University College with my favourites being Animal Health and Disease and Applied Health Management.

I am currently a member of the British and Irish Society of Animal Science (BISAS) where I am a member of the early careers committee (ECC) and scientific committee.

Current teaching

At Hartpury I an teaching at all levels of undergraduate provision and across multuple programmes including Bioveterinary Science and Zoology. The modules I lead are:

  • Animal Disease and Parasitology
  • Animal Health and Disease
  • Biochemistry & Toxicology
  • Management of Animal Health
  • Research Methods for Agriculture and Animal Scientists
  • Anatomy and Physiology for small animal hydrotherapists

Module I teach on:

  • Pathology
  • Pharmacology
  • Professional and Academic Skills in Animal Biology

I also supervise students dissertation projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and would encourage working with external partners to promote collaborative research.

Research interests

My main research interests focus around understanding livestock diseases and investigating strategies to improve both animal health and welfare. This stems from my PhD which studied factors influencing capripoxviruses (poxviruses affecting cattle, goats and sheep) virulence and providing rationale for a genetically engineered vaccine design. Moving into HE lecturing has since led me to research technologies that can enhance livestock welfare.

Currently I am investigating the barriers and facilitators of technologies used in pig farming.
