Description
Background/AimsRecent studies have highlighted the benefits of collaborative models of professional learning, including teaching observation schemes (e.g., O’Leary and Savage, 2020). However, there remains a lack of clarity around how professional development cultures can be shaped to empower, rather than impose upon, staff. This workshop aims to explore how institutional teaching development schemes can be designed and delivered with staff, not to them, emphasising connection, collaboration and co-creation. Drawing on a current Institutional Teaching Development Scheme framework (i.e. De Martin Silva et al., 2025), information on how we can champion agency and bespoke personalisation will be shared.
Key Elements
The key skills and activities covered will include:
1: An introduction to a University Teaching Development Scheme and exploration of key findings that demonstrate the impact of a personalised approach. (20 minutes)
2: The exploration of the mentor’s role and professional development needed, including hands-on practice using real-life scenarios. (25 minutes)
3: The consolidation of learning and identification of actionable insights ('So what?') applied to attendees' contexts. (15 minutes)
Conclusions
The workshop offers both theoretical and applied insights, advocating for a shift from ‘done to’ to ‘done with’ professional development approaches. Participants will leave with insights into how to consolidate a bespoke teaching development scheme as part of a ‘wider professional development system’. They will be exposed to a detailed explanation of the framework and practical tools to foster developmental cultures in their own institutions, reinforcing the idea that effective professional development begins with developing those who support it.
